Are you people nuts or what? Have you even read the House and Senate Bills? There is wording in the Bill that prohibits strikes and protects volunteers. As a matter of fact…I cannot even recall the last time in the last 30 years that police officers or firefighters went on strike in this country. The IAFF only prohibits its members from volunteering for departments where a Union Local exists. Nothing of what you have said is accurrate. The end result of collective bargaining is an M.O.U. or Memorandum of Understanding which in simple terms is an agreement in writing of working conditions, wages, staffing etc. Both employer and EMPLOYEE are bound by it. This does not take authority away from the Fire and Police Chiefs as some ignorrant people would believe. Police and Fire Unions do not ask for anything that their employers cannot already afford thus no increased cost to the tax payer! The end result is a benefit to the public…such as minimum staffing…which of course is a safety issue. How would you like it if your house was on fire and only 2 men and a truck showed up. Or it took 10 minutes for the closest cop to arrive. We (police officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMT’s) know our jobs and what we need to do them…not the politicians, lawyers or the Chamber of Commerce or the Heritage Foundation. North Carolina and Virginia are the only states that prohibit collective bargaining for public employees…what does that tell you. It tells me that they are not labor friendly and just a little behind the times….So do us a big favor….stop spreading lies….because the only people you are hurting are the ones who are going to save your lives one day…think about it. But you need not worry….because we will respond as promplty as possible and deliver professional non-biased service to the best of our abilities despite our lack of staffing and pay. We will save your life.
