Mr. Knowles was well known for several points -  1) that he represented the Winnipeg North Center riding of Winnipeg

2) Mr. Knowles carried a notebook in his pocket of election results and tallies

3) the only time Mr. Knowles utilized a modern newfangled calculator was the one time he lost the riding – in the disastrous 1958 Difenbaker election. According to the authoritative index Wikipedia: ” He (Mr. Knowles)  lost his seat in the 1958 election that almost wiped out the CCF, and went to work for the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).

4) It was often said , among Canadian political commentators that there were only two elections in the world whose results could be assured before tallying – those were the Kremlin and Winnipeg North Center

Political History
In 2004, New Democrat Judy Wasylycia-Leis was elected for the third time, defeating former Liberal MP Rey Pagtakhan by 3,016 votes. Wasylycia-Leis was first elected in Winnipeg North Centre in 1997.

That riding was home to J.S. Woodsworth, founder of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. He was elected in 1925 as the Labour candidate following the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike.

He held the seat for Labour/CCF until his death in 1942. In a byelection in 1942, Stanley Knowles was elected for the CCF. Knowles won all elections up to 1980 except for one loss to PC John MacLean in the 1958 Tory sweep.

Knowles suffered a stroke in October 1981. New Democrat Cyril Keeper won in 1984. Liberal David Walker won in 1988 and 1993.

In the old riding of Winnipeg North, New Democrat David Orlikow won nine elections from 1962 through 1984 but was defeated in 1988 by Liberal Rey Pagtakhan. In 1993, Pagtakhan defeated Wasylycia-Leis by 8,480 votes.
